New Hampshire residents could see a nearly 10% increase in their electricity bills starting August 1, as Eversource files for a higher Default Service supply rate amidst ongoing volatility in wholesale energy markets. The proposed rate hike, if approved by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (PUC), would increase the residential supply rate from 8.9 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 11.2 cents per kWh.
For the average customer using 600 kWh per month, this change would result in an estimated increase of $13.61 on their monthly bill — a 9.9% jump from current charges.
Eversource, which does not generate its own electricity, is required by law to purchase power on behalf of customers who opt for its Default Service. These supply costs are passed through directly to customers without any markup or profit. New Hampshire adjusts these supply rates semiannually, on February 1 and August 1.
The utility company also has other pending adjustments under review by the PUC, including a distribution rate review and storm recovery costs, which could further impact the delivery portion of customer bills later this summer.
Community Power and Competitive Supply Options
Not all Granite State customers will be affected by this proposed increase. As of May, about 45% of Eversource residential customers in New Hampshire receive their electricity through a community power program or an alternative supplier. These customers will not be subject to the new Default Service rate.
Eversource urges customers to shop around for supply rates that suit their needs. The New Hampshire Department of Energy maintains a website to help residents compare suppliers and make informed decisions about switching.

What This Means for Newcomers and Out-of-State Homebuyers
If you're considering a move to the Granite State, it’s important to factor in utility costs when budgeting for homeownership or rental living. While New Hampshire does not have a general sales or earned income tax, energy prices can fluctuate and are influenced by national supply dynamics. Be sure to explore local community power programs and energy efficiency options available in your town or city.
As the region faces increasing unpredictability in energy supply markets, understanding your utility choices can play a key role in maintaining financial stability in your new home.
